I used to believe that God’s love for me would grow the closer I drew myself to Him. I knew He loved me, because I had heard John 3:16 my whole life, but I thought there was a way for His love for me to grow as I knew Him more.
But to believe this would be to believe that God’s love is conditional. To believe He is like us.
Lamentations 3:22-23 reveals the truth of God’s love for me. It says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
We combat lies with truth, and God’s Word is truth.
Because God never changes, and because He isn’t like us—sinful and broken—His love doesn’t change either.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His steadfast love endures forever” (Psalm 136:1).
While my love for Him might waver based on my mood, my circumstances, or my sin, His love will never leave me. His love is eternal.
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
As my love for Christ grows throughout my Christian walk, His love for me remains, steady and unimaginably great, as it always has been.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you” (Jeremiah 31:3).
To be known and loved by this God who knows everything about me is the sweetest, most wonderful love there is.
If you’ve ever wondered whether this kind of love could be for you too, know that it is. His love isn’t earned, it’s freely given. You are already fully known and fully loved by the God of all creation. All you have to do is receive it.
“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19 NIV).
